Hello again from Turrialba, Costa Rica this week was full of new experiences and adventures that made me grow as a biomedical engineer. On Monday, Emily and I joined Katherine and Eloy, two of the field engineers at meditek, for a trip to Turrialba a town two hours from San Jose that is building a brand new hospital. Meditek is one of the biggest suppliers of equipment for this new hospital in terms of anesthesia machines, monitors, and sensors. Furthermore, GE send some defective sensors and the task of Emily and me was to locate the defective sensors around the hospitals.

We had to our advantage that the hospital hasn’t been open so we could walk freely from room to room looking for this type of sensor. It took us almost two days to find all of the GE sensors, most of them were still in boxes which made our task easier when we were able to locate the boxes. Furthermore, on Wednesday the engineer in charge of the Turrialba project asked us to turn on all the vital sign monitors and check if they were working fine because the hospital is opening in two weeks. As you can imagine, testing almost a hundred monitors wasn’t an easy task however we were able to finish by Friday and have the client happy.

Friday, we got back to San Jose to pick up more clothes and Katherine drove us to Naranjo to meet our peers for our adventure in the poas volcano. Emily and I met everybody at the Airbnb where we had a very nice night playing cards and eating pasta for dinner. Saturday, we went on our adventure in the Poas volcano, we walk almost 20 kilometers but we had a lot of fun interacting with nature and admiring how beautiful Costa Rica is. The adventure was amazing however it was one of the most tiring experiences of my life as I didn’t have much equipment to hike. Next week I am going to travel to Puerto Viejo with Katherine, Eloy, and Emily. I will be sharing all my experiences in this beautiful place.
