I was drawn to bioengineering as an undergraduate because it is intrinsically interdisciplinary and global, combining design, science, math, and sociology to improve healthcare. Growing up with a disabled sister, I have seen firsthand the impact that medical technology has on the quality of life for the individual receiving care and for the caregiver. Since receiving my B.S. in Bioengineering from Union College in 2016, I have been working as a CAD Engineer at an orthopedics company designing patient-specific knee replacements. The GMI track at Rice is exciting to me because of its unique focus on developing healthcare solutions in low-resource environments through immersion in a community. In the future, I hope to design devices that are more widely accessible, affordable, and sustainable.
