Hi everyone! I cannot believe it has been a month since I arrived in Costa Rica. This journey has been nothing short of transformative. I’ve learned so much and explored countless amazing places. However, I did fall ill this past week, which put a temporary pause on my adventures.

Despite this setback, my time at Confluent has been incredibly enriching. I’ve been inspecting balloon stents, a task that requires meticulous attention to detail. Distinguishing between parts that meet the required specifications and those with defects is crucial. Even a millimeter’s difference in length can determine whether an outcome is healthy or potentially complicated.

During my training, I learned how to set up and use the instruments to analyze the stent. This process involves using a ruler, a microscope, and a small light that can be inserted inside the stent. Observing the stent in a darkened setting allows the light to illuminate the intricate internal patterns that need to be carefully examined. It’s fascinating to see the precise and detailed design inside the stent, something so small yet so significant.

After mastering this, I began training on how to submit technical documentation. The process is very thorough, involving detailed descriptions, precise measurements, and careful adherence to regulatory standards. This aspect of my work has been just as important as the hands-on inspection, ensuring that every step is documented accurately to maintain the highest quality standards.

I have also learned about how to deal with clients. Building strong client relationships is essential in this field, and I’ve gained valuable experience in effective communication, understanding client needs, and providing timely updates and feedback. This training has taught me the importance of clarity and professionalism when interacting with clients, which is crucial for maintaining trust and ensuring successful collaborations.

Exploring Costa Rican Cuisine

When I wasn’t at Confluent, I had the opportunity to dive into the rich and diverse Costa Rican cuisine. One of the highlights was visiting a local restaurant nearby. The flavors were incredible and truly reflective of the country’s culinary heritage. From the hearty gallo pinto, a traditional breakfast dish of rice and beans, to the savory casado, which includes rice, beans, plantains, salad, and a choice of meat, each meal was a delightful experience.

I also enjoyed trying ceviche, a dish made from fresh raw fish cured in citrus juices, usually accompanied by onions, peppers, and cilantro. The freshness and tanginess of the ceviche were unlike anything I had tasted before. And let’s not forget the delicious Costa Rican coffee, known for its rich flavor and aroma, which became a staple during my mornings.

The local desserts were just as impressive. Tres leches cake, a sponge cake soaked in three kinds of milk, was a sweet treat that quickly became a favorite. The mix of textures and sweetness was a perfect way to end a meal.

Reflecting on My Journey

Although my illness this past week was a bit of a setback, it gave me time to reflect on everything I’ve experienced and learned. Costa Rica has taught me the importance of balancing work and exploration, and how vital attention to detail is in both life and work. The skills I’ve gained at Confluent, particularly in inspecting balloon stents, submitting technical documentation, and dealing with clients, have been invaluable, and I’m excited to apply them in my future endeavors.

I’m grateful for this incredible month in Costa Rica and look forward to more adventures and learning experiences in the future. Thank you for following along on my journey!
