¡Buenas!
This Tuesday, I shadowed two breast implant surgeries! One was for implants replacement, and the other used the new company’s technology to introduce implants into the body. Besides that, my accomplishments this week included reading ASTM and ISO standards, drafting and revising a lab report on suture tab resistance, measuring and defining parameters of a specimen, and reviewing and correcting 37 engineering drawings. I’m looking forward to visiting the manufacturing floor tomorrow!
This Saturday, Aiman, Summan, and I explored downtown San José.
Here was our itinerary:
- Catedral Metropolitana (Metropolitan Cathedral)
- Parque Central de San José (Central Park)
- Mercado Central (San José Central Market)
- Iglesia de la Merced
- Correos de Costa Rica (Downtown Post Office)
- Monumento a los presentes
- Museo de Arte Costarricense/MAC (Museum of Costa Rican Art).
I usually send postcards to my family and friends when I travel, so I bought some postcards at the central market at a pretty great deal – 5 for ₡1000. I stayed at the art museum a bit longer to sketch sculptures and got to participate in a community art project by filling a print screen with crayon. The artists said this collected art piece will be exhibited for two months at the art museum starting in July. I might revisit MAC to find the square I drew.

Regarding trying out some local food, I tried Bon o Bon chocolate, Crema Fresa Galletas, and Recreo Galletas brought by my colleagues. I also discovered that Starbucks in Costa Rica has empanadas. I tried the chicken one, but my friend said the cashier suggested the cheese and tomato one. I also tried the cinnamon and vanilla ice cream at the central market. It was definitely an interesting flavor, and I recommend sharing it with your friends. I got food poisoning but I still think it’s worth trying.

Update on Duolingo, I am in Unit 5. I still can’t communicate that well at all in Spanish, but it’s interesting to notice that I can sometimes pick up some words from people’s conversations now. Compared to when I just arrived, I had absolutely no clue what people were saying. I’ll consider this as a progress, but more Spanish immersion is definitely needed.
