It’s officially been the first week of the internship and there have already been so many exciting things! I have already traveled to Alajuela, San Ramon, and Central Sur to visit a wide variety of hospitals and clinics.

The equipment I have seen and worked on:

  • closed and open incubator (incubadora cerrada y abierta)
  • gooseneck lamp (lámpara cuello de ganso)
  • digital vital signs monitor (monitor digital de signos vitales)
  • surgery table (mesa de cirugía)
  • tourniquet system (sistema de torniquete)

Closed incubator and field engineers / mechanics I have worked with

It’s been really cool to take apart the machines to see how they work and run simulations to make sure everything functions correctly.

This weekend, a group of us got a shuttle and we went to the Poas Volcano and Hacienda Alsacia Starbucks Coffee Farm. The volcano became active again on Friday so to get to the viewpoint we had to wear hard hats.

For lunch we went to Freddo Fresas, and fresas means strawberry in spanish. I got their tortilla which was covered in cheese and a strawberry mojito. After Jade and I shared the strawberry cheesecake which was very good!

Then we went to Hacienda Alsacia for a tour of the coffee plantation to learn how the coffee grows and the process needed to get the seeds and roast them. We also got to try some medium roast coffee.

Poas Volcano and strawberry cheesecake!!

Things I have learned:

  • It rains EVERY day
  • There is a set of buttons to click on each machine to set it to service mode
  • There is traffic on every road
  • MORE SPANISH
  • Casado, a popular Tico dish, means marriage and each food represents something -> rice for bride, beans for groom, meat for god’s blessings, sides for the kids

This week I will be traveling to and staying in Limón!
