Hi everyone, I’m Colin! I just finished up my BS in biomedical engineering from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. I was on the biomechanics and rehabilitation track, focusing more on macro-scale biomedical engineering. I was a member of REALab, where I contributed to a pilot study to help create an efficient diagnostic tool for transcranial magnetic stimulation as a therapeutic for those with neurological impairments. In my free time, I love to travel, thrift, do yoga, cook new dishes, and rock climb.
Partaking in the summer internship experience in Nairobi, Kenya at Medevice, I bring with me strong skills in needs finding and design. I am fairly able at using Solidworks to create what I am envisioning and I have a strong understanding that, in order to create a solution, it is non-negotiable to speak with the people who are experiencing the issue (i.e. clinicians, patients, etc). I hope to gain skills in coding, electronic and mechanical testing, and project management.
I had a one day side quest in London on my way over to Nairobi which was a lot of fun! Due to some delayed flights, I wasn’t able to make my flight to Nairobi on time and had to spend a day in London, all accommodated by the airline. I was able to meet up with my friend from the States who is doing his Master’s in London which was a really awesome spontaneous get together. I was able to see Big Ben, the London Eye, the Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, and the Gherkin building! Also, riding the Tube was way more intuitive than the NYC subway. As Casey phrased it, I was able to turn lemons into lemonade!
I hope to push myself to do things this summer that I am not yet good at or have no experience in. I hope to improve my coding skills if possible because I am admittedly not the most computer savvy. I hope to be able to look back on taking a leap in moving across the globe for 10 weeks and say that I pushed myself to try new things, meet new people, and improve my skills. That way, hopefully, I can swing that momentum into GMI and have a great time while also stretching my abilities, both in my personal life and in my technical skills for a career in the medical industry.
