Hello everyone! My name is Apple (Yu Lin) Lee. I am originally from Taiwan but have lived in three major cities in the US (Chicago, Boston, and San Francisco) since moving to the States in 2018. I graduated from the University of Chicago with a double major in Biological Sciences and Economics in June 2022. In my free time, I catch up with every single F1 race, travel around the world, try different cuisines, and read fiction novels. I will be spending my summer in Costa Rica, in particular, Hospital de NiƱos, for clinical immersion.

Having worked as a clinical engineer at Noah Medical for the past two years, I have observed many bronchoscopy procedures at various hospitals (private, community, and research focused academic centers), supported over 500 cases with 15 physicians, and have experience working with physicians to understand how they use certain medical devices and what the pain points and feedback are for the devices that are currently being used, in hopes of creating iterations of products that are easier and more effective to use.

However, I have never worked with pediatric patients, and am looking forward to understanding and learning first-hand how patient interactions, along with interactions with patient guardians, differ from adult patients. With pediatric patients, I imagine there would be more precautions and ways to approach diagnosis and treatment delivery with various considerations. I am also hoping to develop my clinical needs finding skills, to hone my ability in translating observations into actionable problem statements to work on solutions for, and subsequently filtering them to realistic projects and creating action plans.

Today marks my first day in Costa Rica. Within 2 hours of landing, I was touring the Saturday Farmer’s Market in San Jose with Alex, Malcolm, and Dr Wettergreen. I am very excited about the upcoming experience and cannot wait to start off with the Needs Finding and Medical Innovation Bootcamps next week!
