Hello! My name is Emma. I just graduated (May ’25) from Rice with a Bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering and a minor in Spanish, and I will be continuing my studies at Rice through the Global Medical Innovation Master’s program. I am passionate about medical device design and hope to enter the industry as a product development engineer post-graduation. In my free time, I love to lift, row, watch sports, bake, and travel when I can!

This summer, I will be living in Nairobi, Kenya and interning with Medevice, a medical device company focused on improving the quality of healthcare solutions in Africa through contextually appropriate and innovative designs. I have internship experience with electronics testing and development, as well as experience with medical device design through my senior design project, so I hope to bridge these experiences at Medevice as I apply my skills to help advance their product designs. Specifically, I hope to improve my skills in CAD, coding, and electrical and mechanical testing and design in the context of medical devices.

The decision to travel across the world for this internship was a big step out of my comfort zone, but I am very excited to experience life in another country. So far, I have gotten adjusted to the new time zone and shopped for groceries at the Sarit Center Mall, and I can’t wait to visit the many destinations Nairobi has to offer! I also look forward to see how the medical device industry varies in different parts of the world as I intern with Medevice. Going into the GMI program this fall, I hope to have a better understanding of the global medical technology industry and how I can increase the accessibility of medical devices through the product development process. I look forward to starting my internship in two days and getting to explore Africa this summer!
