Hi. Sadly, I’m sick this week in more than one way – homesick and have a cold or maybe COVID? I’m not sure what I have but it’s not good. I’m praying that I don’t get anyone else sick!!! #staystrong

This week we have been rounding on patients from different units such as neonatal, cardiology and infectious disease (which may be where I got sick from 🫠😔).

Regardless, it was very interesting to see the interplay between medical staff while rounding on the patients. One interesting patient we saw had severe neurodevelopmental issues and couldn’t swallow. Therefore, she had a gastrostomy and was fed liquid food through a special device. However, her medications also needed to be delivered through this device. The doctors carefully calculated her doses based on her weight but also had to consider the sugar present in many liquid medications. The syrup medications had too much sugar and therefore they had to switch to pills. Since the pills had to go through the tube, the patient’s mother would have to crush and dissolve the pills in order to feed them through the device.

Unfortunately, I don’t have many pictures because of patient privacy protection. But this was definitely a really cool week (only until I got sick 🙂‍↔️).
