Hi and Welcome to week 2 of Costa Rica!
This week, I had the opportunity to participate in the needs-finding bootcamp lead by Dr. Casey Howard. In this bootcamp, I was able to shadow a cardiologist, pediatric interventional cardiologist, ENT, and interventional cardiology. I made many observations and found areas for improvement. The most interesting thing I learned is that hearing loss can be caused by a mutation in the genes producing a protein called Conexin 26. In Costa Rica, there is no option the get this testing as it is very expensive. But this testing could help guide clinical decisions. In general, I think there is a lot to learn from clinical observations.
In addition to this, I’ve bonded with my classmates JJ, Jade, and Summan in our plight to get to all our rotations on time. Fun fact: the Uber app in Costa Rica requires you to use a pin when you get in the car. Also, here is a photo of our dinner today!
We have been walking to nearby restaurants and seeing some on San Jose as well. Here is what it looks like around our hotel.
This is our hostel.
Ok, that’s all. Talk to you next time!
