The first few days here have been a blast! I’ve learned so much about the nuances of Costa Rican culture. First, let’s talk business. Over the past three days, I’ve visited Hospital de Clinica Biblica, Hospital CIMA, and Hospital de Trauma. Although I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t get to see any “rough” surgeries, I learned tons just by observing nurse dynamics and medical equipment. It’s clear that Costa Rican healthcare system is fundamentally different than what I’ve traditionally seen in America and I’m looking forward to understanding its beautiful complexities.

So far in my free time, I’ve explored a mall – Multiplaza Escazu – and bought some groceries. Unfortunately, I lost my debit card at the mall trying to draw cash. Apparently, if you don’t retrieve your card in 3 seconds, the ATM gets to keep your card. Till’ next time ATM, I’m coming back for my card and you better be ready.

Another fun highlight was Monday karaoke night. I would definitely describe myself as an extroverted introvert so it was really fun stepping out of my comfort zone and singing Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” with the boys. Honestly, the past week has just been very different for me. I’ve met so many fun people, including Rice undergrads, Selina natives, UCR students, etc., and I’m looking forward to meeting so many more.

Lastly, our GMI group is now dedicated to tracking a particular calico cat. Not sure what his name is, but we’ll find out. But for now, enjoy a picture of “el gatito” hiding behind some pottery. See you next week – peace!
