Highlights:

  • Our Britt Coffee tour guide Luis
  • Strawberry overnight oats
  • Making good progress on both of my projects
  • Being able to successfully help navigate an Uber driver in Spanish by myself

Lowlights:

  • Having to wait half an hour for an Uber to pick us up from work
  • The last bus from Monteverde leaving at 2:30pm foiling our plans once again

Britt Coffee Tour:

For this weekend’s activity Laurel, Vanessa, Raniyah, and I went on the Britt Coffee Tour. Britt Coffee is probably Costa Rica’s most popular brand of coffee. It was around half an hour away from Don Francisco, which is pretty close relative to other attractions. Our tour guide Luis was hilarious and once again I was impressed by the way he was able to seamlessly switch between explaining things in Spanish and English. The tour consisted of walking through small exhibits detailing the life cycle of the coffee bean and the production cycle of turning the bens into usable coffee. There was also a live cupping session where we learned how to properly prepare and drink coffee like a professional. Finally, they played a video at the end where our tour guide also did a performance on stage along with it. We also were able to try samples of their different coffee roasts. Although I am not much of a coffee drinker, it was still a very engaging experience and I learned many fun facts about coffee, such as how Costa Rica is 2nd in coffee consumption in Latin America. After the tour, we had lunch at the restaurant at the plantation and it was delicious! We then stopped by the Britt Coffee shop and bought a bunch of souvenirs.

Baby coffee plants

My lunch at Britt – I had enough caffeine at this point so I chose to drink juice

Big shoutout to our tour guide Luis

Establishment Labs:

For our joint project, Vanessa and I finished completing our prior art search. Some parts were a bit challenging required some research, as neither Vanessa nor I have too much experience with the patent process and its legal rules. After finishing our patent research, Vanessa and I brainstormed several different solutions. We each came up with very interesting and promising solutions, and our manager Audry seemed to be impressed. Our next steps are to collect materials and start prototyping, which is very exciting. For my IoT project, this week I made a spreadsheet to assist me in narrowing down the potential companies. Along with the spreadsheet, I also started working on a separate document that contains more specific details about each of the companies in the spreadsheet. My goal for next week for this project is to finish both the spreadsheet evaluation and the document.

That wraps it up for this week, tune in next week for more updates!
