In my last blog, I briefly mentioned that I was excited to work in a Costa Rican office during the World Cup. Well, last week, I was finally able to witness just what that means here. On Wednesday, we had a meeting with the entire R&D department, and one of the first items on the agenda was discussing what to do on game days. People had the option to shift their hours around the 6am start time, work from home, or take a vacation day. It was so amazing to realize how passionate the fans are about their team that they would be willing to take a vacation day to see the game. On game day, our experience at Heredia was much different than that of our classmates at Coyol. Rather than a massive watch party in the cafeteria, our office was almost completely empty – everyone was gone to see the game. The plus side was that there was no traffic on the way to work! We watched the game with a handful of colleagues in the breakroom while trying to get a little work done. I loved seeing/hearing people’s reactions whenever anything exciting happened. My favorite part of the games is hearing how long the announcers can say ‘Gooaall’ for (though, unfortunately, they were not announcing goals for the Costa Rican team on Friday). I am so happy we are here for a World Cup year!

I can’t really take pictures of most things at work so here I am with the company sign

Amid the World Cup exhilaration, I had a very busy and enlightening week at work. I learned about the two main projects I will be working on for the summer:

  1. Developing and validating a test method for the modification of a guidewire to optimize lead placement during pacemaker implantation
  2. Corrective and Preventative Action for a torque device used with certain guidewires

Though I can’t say much more about the projects right now, I am looking forward to learning a lot throughout the rest of summer. Another really exciting part of the week was streaming a live popliteal artery intervention procedure from a hospital in the United States. Everyone was huddled around the TVs in different conference rooms (kind of like watching a soccer game, but with a lot less yelling). Both during the procedure and in the discussion afterwards I learned an incredible amount about how medical devices are used in real time.

Again – no real pictures allowed at work, so here is the beautiful view Sarah and I have for breakfast every day

We stayed local this weekend and spent Saturday exploring San José. I’ve never been in a city with so many brightly colored buildings! We went to a beautiful butterfly garden, saw a monkey, and walked through the lively park with ice cream so I would call it a pretty good day. And the best part of all – no rain!
