Tomorrow is the day! The other GMI students and I will be traveling to Costa Rica with Dr. Richardson tomorrow for our global industry internships. I am incredibly excited to begin this journey as the first installment of my professional master’s degree. While in Costa Rica, I will be working at Boston Scientific for 8-weeks in manufacturing engineering. I haven’t gotten the details on my project just yet, but I should receive more information in the next few days!

The past three days we have had our pre-internship orientation at Rice. As a recent Rice graduate (Class of 2016), it was great coming back to campus just a little over two weeks after I graduated–I already missed it! The first two days of orientation consisted largely of discussions with Dr. Richardson and Sheretta about the logistics of the GMI program and our industry internships. Additionally, we spent a great deal of time with Dr. VanKleeck from the Rice Center for Engineering Leadership (RCEL) learning about leadership, teamwork, and the importance of learning how to interact with those who have a different personality type than you. The last day of orientation (today) was a lot more relaxed than the previous two. After completing a small about of paperwork in the morning, the GMI students, Dr. Richardson, and two Rice BIOE PhD students went to Lucky Strike bowling to relax and have some fun!

I’m excited and anxious to leave for Costa Rica tomorrow and can’t wait for the summer ahead of me! I hope to come back to the US in August with a better perspective of the medical technology industry on a global scale, having grown and learned more about myself and my fellow GMI students. With any luck, I will pick up some Spanish along the way too!
